On the occasion of marking the Day of Remembrance for our citizens who were shot in Šumarice, the Mayor of Kragujevac, Nikola Dašić, organized a reception for representatives of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, ministries, the diplomatic corps, as well as delegations from sister cities and friends from both domestic and foreign countries.
The Mayor recalled the tragic October 21, 1941 - a day deeply engraved in the being and identity of Kragujevac, but also in the collective memory of humanity. Welcoming guests to the city that every October once again opens its heart to the whole world, Dašić emphasized that their presence helps the message from the Kragujevac massacre site gain the strength to cross all borders and reach every person on the planet.
From the pain that shrouded our city in grief, faith in life and a strong message emerged—that this must never be repeated, neither here nor anywhere else. We are proud that Kragujevac today is part of the "Cities of Peace" Association and that, together with friends from many countries, we share the same values: that memory is the foundation of the future, and peace is the greatest victory of humanity, said Mayor Dašić.
He reminded everyone that each year, the people of Kragujevac, along with their guests, lay wreaths and observe a moment of silence to honor those who taught us what freedom means.
Thank you for being part of our commitment and for preserving the truth and dignity of the victims together, said the Mayor, inviting the attendees to join the traditional anti-war event, “The Great School Class” in Šumarice - a lesson of remembrance, life, peace, love, and humaneness.
