As part of the visit and celebration of the “Days of Jewish Culture in Kragujevac”, Israeli Ambassador H.E. Ms. Avivit Bar-Ilan visited Health Station No. 4 of the Health Center, which, as a sign of gratitude and remembrance, bears the name of a citizen of Kragujevac of Jewish nationality, Dr. Moshe Eli.

Dr. Eli was a well-known gynecologist, surgeon, and humanist in Kragujevac in the 1930s, an active member and donor of the Red Cross, as well as the president of the Jewish religious community. He was killed in a mass shooting in Kragujevac in 1941.

On this occasion, Ambassador Bar-Ilan and Dr. Vasilije Antić, Director of the Health Center, unveiled a memorial plaque with the name of this famous doctor.

Ambassador Avivit Bar-Ilan expressed her gratitude for the nurturing and preservation of the memory of the citizens of Israel who lived and worked in Kragujevac, emphasizing that all this points to the common history and destiny shared by the two peoples. Events from the past bind us today, and they also oblige us for the future. I am very glad to be in Kragujevac today and to have the honor of opening the Days of Jewish Culture. Last year, the Embassy donated medical equipment to the Health Center, and I am particularly pleased that this donation is significant for the treatment of the citizens of Kragujevac, said the Ambassador.

Jelena N. Pavić, member of the City Council for Health and Social Care, emphasized that such events are of exceptional importance for nurturing and deepening ties and cooperation. She reminded that the Health Center received modern medical equipment to provide health care to its fellow citizens from donations from the Embassy of Israel, and that a number of projects in the field of information technology have been implemented in cooperation with the embassy.

After the unveiling of the memorial plaque, Dr. Vasilije Antić introduced Ambassador Bar-Ilan to the history of the health facility, the doctors of Jewish origin who treated the people of Kragujevac, as well as the donations provided by the Embassy of Israel in recent years. Thousands of citizens were examined with medical equipment from these donations - including ECG machines, a defibrillator, an ophthalmoscope, and a spirometer with a computer and printer. However, the most important of all are the connections and visits through which we preserve the memory of our fellow citizens of Jewish nationality, for us and future generations, emphasized Dr. Antić.

The central event of this year's "Days of Jewish Culture in Kragujevac" will be held at the Đura Jakšić House, organized by the Association of Serbian-Israeli Friendship "Ahava" and Kragujevac cultural institutions, under the auspices of the City of Kragujevac.
